devon tracey - web designer
A web designer named devon tracey has been scamming people out of down deposits for years. I was a victim myself and I have found over ten people on the internet alone who have filed the same complaints. I will not mention where he lives but if he's scammed you, you know already.
He does the following:
Web designer devon tracey usually responds to craig's list ad's with people looking for a web designer. He'll talk to you a few times on the phone and have you fill out a standard contract and then ask for a deposit. In case you would, never give someone a deposit before at least receiving a small sample of your work as a good faith deposit of their own. This is the point when the web designer devon tracey dissapears with your deposit, your image files and you will never find him again, unless you take him to small claims and even still he will try and avoid being served.
I would recommend the following to anyone who might not know already:
1. try and do business localy with someone you can meet in person and who has a local phone and address
2. do an internet search on them
3. do they have a website of their own? or is it under construction as devons was?
4. do a better business bureau background check on
5. get the good faith piece of work before putting down a partial deposit

Yep, he did the same thing to me too / he's a real low life. I'm going to sue him myself.
Devon Tracey has done this to "lots" of people and I've read complaints about him all over the place. He gives all web designers a bad name.
I can't beleive this guy is still doing this! Someone needs to take him to court at least!

Yep, got me too. Sounds like I was one of the luckier ones. He actually produced a nice site (although it took forever and it's frought with technical problems). Good luck to all those who are taking him to court !
I thought I was the only one this had happened to! I guess it was far from that.
I took Roger Rose, owner of Rosenet Marketing to small claims court and won a judgment for my deposit. He took my deposit and never finished my site. Roger is associated with MaWebcenters or Market America Webcenters as a web site reseller. Roger Rose still hasn't paid off the judgment.
Hi Ron, What you can do is get a collection agency involved - you'll get much less than you were awarded but they will make his life hell and you can also pursue getting onto his credit history by contacting the credit bureaus.
thanks for this heads up. i'm a freelance web / graphic designer and people like this are bad for the whole industry. i'll help spread the word about devon tracey, roger rose and others.
I found a blog post from someone who had been scammed by devon tracey as recently as the past few months!!!! so he's still "working"
That's sucks... almost as bad as being a web designer and not getting paid after many hours of work. Some people will ask for a demo, copy the source code and images, and you never recieve your payment. It's happened to me several times over the years.
If you're expecting any designer/programmer to do work without a deposit you'll be looking for a long time. I understand people like this guy are giving honest business people a bad rap, but just because one is like this does not mean all are.
However, your advice to do business with local talent is good. Google local for web designers, you'd be suprised how many hard working web professionals are out there.
Why post on craig's list for this kind of work at all?
Hi, I've actually always signed a contract and recevied a good faith piece of work from designers "before" putting down a deposit. What's the difference in who does it I guess? I think this post is more about devon tracey himself though....
Yep, got me too about 2 years ago. I tried taking him to court but he was unreachable. I hope someone tracks him down and makes him pay.
This has happened to so many people that I think it's worth calling the local police, d.a., and even the local newscast (they love doing those undercover consumer reports). Something needs to be done so innocent persons who probably can't afford what devon tracey is stealing from them, as I couldn't, are not harmed again!
