Do Animals Belong in the Lab?

To the Editor:

The animal rights movement is often mischaracterized as a fringe movement, populated only by those who speak through unsigned threats or property damage and violence (front page, July 23). But most animal-rights supporters seek redress within the law and mainstream political channels.

We are lawyers and doctors, students and parents, former cattle ranchers and even a metal worker from the Bronx. To focus on the actions of radicals within any movement is to serve its opposing interests. - KATHLEEN EDDY

I woke up hungry today and here's a quick roll call of the vegan meals on my mind.

Organic greens topped with smoked tofu and toasted almonds; whole wheat wrap with brown rice, black beans, guacamole and lettuce; amy's tofu scramble wrap with organic tofu, mushroom and peppers; salad with smoked tofu, soy bacon bits, olive and lemon, salt and pepper on mixed organic greens; a vegan chocolate chip cookie at birdbath on 7th ave.; miso soup and steamed spinach dumplings; blossom's Portobella Ciabatta (grilled portobella, roasted red peppers, carmelized onions topped with vegan mozzarella - served with fries or salad); peanut butter and banana on 7 grain bread; village naturals black bean burger with guacamole, soy bacon and greens on a whole wheat bun with a side order of yam fries; snice's vegan caesar wrap with greens, croutons, smoked tofu and italian dressing; whole wheat pasta salad mixed with black olives green and red peppers; amy's vegan pizza topped with caramelized onions, mushrooms and peppers on whole wheat crust; spicy stir fry from gobo; fruit salad topped with shaved coconut...

Meat produced in vitro (in the laboratory - outside the body) could be the way of the future and PETA has challenged researchers to come up with viable consumer meat produced in vitro...to the tune of 1 million dollars! I think this is an exciting idea and meat produced in this manner would be cleaner, let alone the horrors that farm animals would be spared from. I wouldn't start eating meat again but for those who do they would be able to in a guilt-free environment. It seems to work out on all sides.

Planting trees is such an easy way to combat global warming and I'm definitely going to start donating to charities who plant trees but I'm also going to get my hands dirty and plant a few myself. * This is one of the reasons I've always thought these programs where they send farm animals to desperate parts of Africa is crazy. If the persons in need just ate all the foods they were feeding the livestock daily, they would get so much more food then they ever will from the livestock. Go veg!

A show I watch on MSNBC called Your Business had a segment this weekend with the founder of Green Order, Andrew Shapiro. Green Order shows companies how making your office more energy efficient is actually cost efficient. Some of the items they discussed were:

The Last 3 DVD's I've Watched -

1. There Will be Blood: There is always some genius in a movie by director Paul Thomas Anderson and There Will be Blood does not disappoint. I didn't mind the whopping run time of Magnolia but when it ended I was ready for it to end. But I could have watched Daniel Day-Lewis' unprecedented performance for 2-3 hours more. The combination of Day-Lewis' performance with the music of Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood and Anderson's gift of visual rhythm creates a primal mood. Then came the ending...and for many, including me, it doesn't work but it's still a brilliant film (worth watching more than once) and I will definitely be on line for the next Paul Thomas Anderson film.

2. Year of the Dog: Year of the Dog was directed by the writer of School of Rock and Nacho Libre. You shouldn't expect that type of humor in Year of the Dog but you can expect to be surprised by the direction the film goes. Molly Shannon is wonderful in the role of a woman whose best relationships have always been with animals. When her dog Pencil dies her life is thrown upside down. She becomes a Vegan, starts campaigning for animal welfare and tries to find inner happiness. Those around her are no help and make her feel crazy and crazy is what she starts to become. I would've liked the movie to make a more clear distinction that the ones who perpetrate the horrors of industrial farming and cruel lab tests are the ones who are crazy but this movie is not about animal welfare. It is about one woman trying to find her place in life and you will probably enjoy it more if you go into it thinking that way.

3. Enron - The Smartest Guys in the Room: To me the Independent movie market mainly comes in the form of documentaries these days. When you think about it, independent movies simply mean they are supposed to be independent of movie studios control and you will mainly find that with documentaries now a days. Enron - The Smartest Guys in the Room is an excellent documentary about the rise and subsequent fall of Enron. It shows in great detail how the public trust and markets were so easily manipulated and how stock prices can be so inflated and hollow at the core. Some of the most harrowing scenes are of energy brokers laughing about the California blackouts that impacted millions of peoples lives. In short, Enron controlled the on and off switch of California's energy grid due to the deregulation of the energy market. This documentary is a great example of how dangerous it can be if the private sector gains too much control over the essentials to our daily lives.

The gourmet dog market is rapidly growing and it's having disastrous effects. Puppy Mills are popping up all over the country to feed this urge to have a pedigree dog. But just like with industrial farming too many people are not searching out the facts of where their dogs are coming from. When it's time to get your next pet please adopt your pets. It is absolutely ridiculous to have dogs being sold for hundreds, even thousands of dollars, when millions of amazingly loyal, wonderful dogs are put to sleep yearly.
