"the dog run - nyc" will be closing -

the-dog-run-nyc

I've always loved the "Dog Run NYC" who offer swim therapy to injured, older and paralyzed dogs. Unfortunately their rent has gone up so much they will have to be closing their doors. I feel swim therapy for dogs is an essential pet service to keep in New York City and I hope they and others will continue to offer this service elsewhere. You can click the following link to read more about the closing of the Dog Run NYC.

thinking about a 2nd pet? now would be a good time!

If you've been thinking about getting a 2nd pet this would be a great time to do it. Unfortunately during the spring and summer animals start to get abandoned at a higher rate in the city and this year is no different. Some of the reasons people give away their pets are when they go on vacation (bizarre?) and if the animal goes into heat. The NYCACC (Animal Care and Control) will be forced to start putting down some of these animals if they are not adopted. You can view adoptable animals from the NYCACC by clicking here.

shhhhhh - nyc noise code takes aim on barking dogs & construction:

Just the other day I joked about being a lifetime new yorker and needing the noise on the street to fall asleep. I remember seeing a John Cusak movie where he's a native new yorker whose traveled to the south and the only way he can sleep at night is by playing street noise on his radio by the bed. The truth is it's much louder in the city then I can ever remember and I don't seem to be alone. According to the city's 311 complaint line, "there were 38,660 noise complaints in 2005 and 41,856 in 2006", and most people wouldn't even think about complaining in the first place. The main issues during the day were construction. But for the late hours barking dogs and air conditioners topped the list. If the noise from a barking dog is found to be "unreasonable" the new code says you can be fined $75 to $175 for the first offense, if the dog barks more than 10 minutes during the day and 5 minutes at night.

enemy to the nyc dog owner - the nyc bike rider:

Pictures likes these are a dime a dozen in the city. Bikes routinely come close to hitting dogs, baby carriages, let alone our ankles. I'm not into playing a game of inches when it comes to my body. I ride a bike myself in the city and have since I was a kid but it really has become the wild west on the streets. It would be nice to see a little bit more patience from those behind the wheels and on bikes too. Hopefully people will not have to cause a tragedy to slow things down a little.

nyc dog news - nyc dogs to be allowed off leash "legally"

How quickly things change. In mere months we have gone from possibly having the unwritten off leash law ended to now having it extended. In just 30 days from now dogs will be allowed to roam free in many city parks from 9am to 9pm. All you will need is a proof of a current rabies vaccination and license information.

nyc dog news - central park geese problem solved by dogs:

An overflock of Canadian Geese has been causing havoc on the grounds of Central Park. Instead of doing something drastic, short-sighted and dumb to solve the problem, dogs have been used to simply not make them feel welcome. The following new york times article discusses further the role dogs have played in clearing the Canadian Geese from Central Park.

K-9 units honored at Grand Central

As we know dogs are so much more than just our best friends. They make
sick children in hospitals feel better, they sniff out bombs, drugs
and walk the blind among other things. K-9 dogs also played a big role in the recovery attempt at ground zero. Click on the following link to read about the k-9 dogs at ground zero, some of whom are no longer with us.

The most recent graduating K-9 units have been named after a fallen officer or serviceman on 9-11. Please click the following link to read more about the present graduating class of the NYC K-9 dogs and their handlers.
