petfood recall update:

In response to the recent pet food recall an increasing amount of pet food companies will phase out any ingredients originating from china. This is a strong statement against the lax agricultural standards in china and the threat of importing ingredients from foreign countries. This is not seen as a lifetime ban as much as an incentive for china to raise it's standards to ensure quality. Please click the following link to read about the history of the pet food recall.

petfood recall - melamine is the chinese bread and butter:

Hey, what a surprise, a Chinese factory has routinely been adding melamine to wheat gluten meant for American pet food for a long time now. I'm glad to hear the food and drug administration has opened up a criminal investigation in the case and searched at least one pet food supplier. I have always worried about the import of produce from certain countries and especially when it comes to livestock. Not surprisingly the tainted melamine could have reached the human population if the department of agriculture had not quarantined 6,000 hogs who had accidentally been given pet food laced with melamine. Chinese factory officials can deny the use of melamine all they want but the use of melamine is widely known and accepted in china as a protein supplement for pet food given to livestock, etc.. They use it plain and simple to save a few bucks.

petfood recall - the story gets shadier by the day:

The more we learn about the events leading up to the recent pet food recall, the more disconcerting the story becomes. In an article written in The New York Times, it has been discovered that three weeks before the massive recall, the chief financial officer of Menu Foods, Inc., Mark Wiens, sold 14,000 shares of Menu Foods, Inc. stock. CFO Weins called it a "horrible coincidence" in Canada's Globe and Mail. It's too much of a coincidence in my mind and it looks and sounds like on top of playing Russian Roulette with other peoples animals, all this guy was thinking about was his bank account. If it turns out CFO Miens had prior knowledge of the contaminated food he should be forced to personally test all future wheat gluten imports from China. If he starts to feel ill maybe he can give me a heads up so I can sell off my stock in time too.

In a related article, the New York Times is covering a story on how U.S. regulators suspect that the contaminated wheat gluten from China deliberately had melamine added to it. The report says they had done this to bolster the protein content. "If melamine was intentionally blended into the wheat gluten, the findings could become a vast setback for agricultural trade between the United States and China, a country known for lax food-safety regulations."

petfood recall - is it time to feed your pet something new?

In light of the recent petfood recall there has been an increase in the amount of organic petfoods sold in the united states as this usa today article discusses. People have also started to make their own petfood. Should this scare really have come as a surprise? Considering how bad the conditions are in "human slaughterhouses", let alone the grade of meat used for animal consumption, I'm almost surprised there haven't been more outbreaks.

On top of making their own petfood or feeding their dog scraps from the table, some dog owners are surprised to learn that most dogs can thrive on a vegetarian diet. Why not look into these and especially involving more of a vegetarian diet for your dog? It seems like a slam dunk but no matter what you decide to do, I would definitely involve your vet in the process to ensure safety.

petfood recall - turns out it wasn't rat poinson:

In this ever changing story it turns out that it wasn't rat poison causing the Menu Foods, Inc petfood recall after all. petfood recall - what exactly are you feeding your dog anyway?

I'm a vegan and so I've read up on how little the USDA knows / can do about the conditions on industrial farms. What this following article discusses is what's actually in your pet food and how secretive the pet food industry is too.

Some people have started to make homemade pet food and others have investigated a vegetarian diet for their dogs which most dogs can thrive on actually.
